Thanks to the reader who passed on the news about the
Chapters/Runnymede Theatre to be sold. Below is the story as reported on the Star's
website.
The Competition Bureau reports interest in the package of 23
stores. We wonder who in Canada might be interested in buying -- and operating -- so many
large bookstores? Future Shop (who tried buying Chapters)? It seems there would not be a
lot of possibilities.
And some related news: those who live in or are familiar with
the Village remember the Book Barrel -- the book store that operated here, under different
owners, for about 30 years. It closed in December of 1999. Not only was the arrival of
Chapters a factor, but the owner was not offered a lease renewal. That property, and the
neighbouring Cheese Boutique property were both bought by the owner of the "Merry go
round" store in the Village. There was much speculation about the potentially large
tenant about to move in. As it has turned out, it appears the new landlord may be waiting.
The Book Barrel location remains a temporary book clearance outlet, and the Cheese
Boutique property has been leased on a relatively short (2 year) arrangement.
Meanwhile, the Book Barrel relocated to Dundas/Islington. It
went out of business a few weeks ago.
