We may be exceeding our email quota for this week, but wanted to pass on this news to our list.

Thursday, Oct 24, the Planning & Transportation committee will hear public input on the proposal to expand the island airport. It will go to full council either next week, or during the November City Council meeting. We will update the list about the progress of this proposal., and keep some information on our website at www.city.world19.com. (You can also find all City Council email addresses, suitable for cutting and pasting, or importing into your address book).

We also have links below for more information on the issue.

Note that the first notice below (from the RMA) is primarily for residents of Ward 14 (KK's ward). Ward 13 councillor David Miller is on record as opposing the plan.

Subject: Council to Vote on Toronto Island Airport Expansion

The spector of expanding operations at the Toronto Island Airport has reared its head again at City Council. Tomorrow, October 24, 2002, will be the last chance for the public to weigh in on this issue before it goes to full Council for a vote in November. It's not too late to register your views on the matter, but you have to act now.

Please take a moment to let Council know how you feel about the proposal to build a fixed link to the Island and expand Toronto Island Airport operations to thousands more flights every month.

Send an email to: carchiba@city.toronto.on.ca

If your email arrives on time, Ms. Archibald will list your name and position on the issue on the agenda for tomorrow's meeting, as well as distribute copies of your email at the meeting.

And send an email to: councillor_korwin-kuczynski@city.toronto.on.ca Also, very important, please send a copy of your email and/or another email directly to Chris Korwin-Kuczynski, who is on one of the Committees that will be making the decision whether or not to recommend expansion tomorrow. Be sure to include your address so he knows you are in his riding. Councillor Korwin-Kuczynski is on record as being in favour of expanding the Toronto Island Airport. The increase in noise and air pollution that would result from the proposed expansion would have an adverse effect on both quality of life and property values in the Roncesvalles-Macdonnell neighbourhood.

Help to change his mind.

And we also received the following note for more background:

Expanded Aiport Contrary to City Council Sustainable Vision !!!

The struggle to save Toronto's clean, green waterfront plan from a busy polluting airport continues.

REGCO and the Toronto Port Authority (TPA) propose to increase the number of flights in and out of the Toronto City Centre Airport (TCCA) to accommodate business travellers. They propose an initial 400,000 passengers, building to over 1,000,000 with at least 130 flights everyday.

Approving a bridge and expanding the Island Airport runs counter to the Council's Vision for the Future of our City.

"The Sustainability Motion", Toronto City Council, October 28, 29, and 30, 1998 and "The Sustainability Goal", Environmental Plan, Clean, Green and Healthy, City of Toronto, 2000, page 18, outline the Toronto City Council Vision for the Future of Toronto.

Council's Vision: Toronto is a clean, green and sustainable city.
Not very clean, not very green and definitely not very sustainable to build the Island bridge and create more air pollution. Closing the Toronto Island Airport, putting in a fast rail link to Pearson and developing more open space supports Council's Vision.

Council's Vision: Toronto is a dynamic city.
An expanded Toronto City Centre Airport will only create a few jobs for a short period of time in comparison to the large number of jobs, homes, and businesses that will start and flourish in the Toronto Waterfront and Portlands area when this demon is finally put to rest.

Council's Vision: Toronto invests in quality of life.
How does an expanded Island Airport invest in quality of life (socially, economically, culturally or environmentally) for the citizens of Toronto? An expanded airport for a few business travellers means more planes, more air pollution, more cars not a better quality of life for the majority.

It is important to take action now. If you can, try to attend the Oct. 24th meeting.

Write to Mayor Mel and all the City Councillors.
There are 45 Members of Toronto City council. The most effective way to communicate with all of them is to write Christine Archibald in the City Clerk's department and to ask her to immediately distribute your communication to the Mayor and all Members of City Council.

She can be reached at: carchiba@city.toronto.on.ca
