ENVIRONMENTAL EVENTS & NEWS

Recent news & upcoming events seem to encourage an environmental theme for this issue. Some of the news we've all recently seen, read, or heard of includes:

 - George Bush, in a bizarre interpretation of priorities (keep the US economy bubbling while the planet "cooks") prepares to kill the Kyoto accord which is designed to prevent, or minimize the global warming that threatens the planet.
 - Toronto rivers are as salty as the ocean, thanks to winter road salting

 - Pollution Probe designed a catchy promotion designed to demonstrate the amount of pollutants a car emits in one kilometre of driving. Someone in a mail room dropped a jar, panic ensured (another "antrax" scare), buildings
were evacuated, and in the end, perhaps many more became aware of just what the effect that "trip to the store" really has.
-Budget slashing at City Hall seems to have gutted any serious effort at dealing responsibly with our garbage.

"ENVIRONMENTAL" EVENTS:

a) Waste Diversion Task Force Open House
Thursday, 7pm, Annette Recreation Centre
333 Annette St., at Evelyn
This task force was created in the wake of the recognition by the City and its citizens that together we needed to find a real solution in dealing with our waste. That committment seems to have died (at least based on budget votes at City Hall). These meetings are an opportunity for us to get information from, and suggest actions and ideas to appropriate City staff. This meeting has recently been added to the original schedule for public consultation. We encourage anyone interested in this issue to attend.

For more information on the Task Force (this meeting is not listed on the
website):

OTHER ITEMS
a) Stelco
Public meeting, sponsored by the City of Toronto, Urban Development Services
Wednesday, April 25
Open House: 6:30pm (to view details of the proposal)
Meeting: 7:30pm
Swansea Town Hall, Rousseau Room, 95 Lavinia Ave.

Also, a working group composed of local groups and residents (including
world19) have been dealing with specific issues such as traffic,
hydrology/structure and built form/design. Minutes of these meetings are
available on our website http://www.stelco.world19.com

b) City Financial Disaster
We have sent out a few dedicated newsletters on this issue, and have little
new to add to the issue. Information is still available on our website
(www.city.world19.com), although we haven't updated those pages recently -
events more too quickly for us too keep up. Other websites (referenced on
our pages) as well as websites of the Star, Globe & National Post (see Don
Wanagas reports) keep up better than we can.

The (ugly) state of the cuts as of April 6 are available (in WORD format)
can be had on our website.

On April 18, the Policy & Finance Committee finish up their work, and the
budget goes to the full Council beginning Monday,  April 23. There is still
time to make your views known. If, like us, you feel the City should not gut
its heart to resolve a crisis not of its making, contact your Councillor. In
particular, councillors in Scarborough, Etobicoke & North York (with a few
exceptions) require encouragement to vote for the City, and not for Cuts. In
the old City of Toronto, Councillors Korwin-Kuczynski, Disero & Silva should
be contacted. If you live in one of these wards, or have friends or
relatives in those wards, phone, write or email!
