1. CITY BUDGET CRISIS
Information is at www.city.world19.com
Events & weather postponed our publicity campaign last
weekend; however, world19 will be out this weekend: - Saturday: Bloor Street in the
Village, mid-day - Sunday: Outside the West End Home Show (Swansea Town Hall) beginning at
11am. Again, we invite readers to look us up -- or join us!
We have an information flyer (http://webhome.idirect.com/~jleeson/city_in_crisis_flyer.doc)
as well as a petition (http://webhome.direct.com/~jleeson/city_in_crisis_petition_l.doc)
.
The petition, addressed to City Council states:
"- We, the undersigned, demand that you as our elected representatives find
ways to continue to support the development and delivery of high quality public services
in the City of Toronto.
- We realize that long-term solutions will take time to develop and require the
cooperation of higher levels of government.
- In the short-term, we support strategies that can preserve our public services
until long-term solutions can be found.
WE SAY:
· NO to 'death by a thousand cuts' of our great City
· YES to innovative plans to preserve City services in the short-term
· YES to negotiations with the Federal and Provincial governments in order to find
and fund long-term solutions"
More information is in the flyer and on our website (it
includes results of this week's Budget Committee meetings).
We feel that anyone who cares about the type of City we will
all be living in this year and the future should carefully consider what is happening and
make your opinion known. We believe that this financial crisis is clearly a result of
provincial downloading, and lack of proper provincial and federal support for cities.
The "solution" City Council seems heading toward is
based on an "understanding" that if the City makes enough cuts (about $150
million), then the province will step in and help solve the problem they created. There
ARE alternatives. www.city.world19.com
2. RENNIE PARK REJUVENATION PROJECT
A group of local parents have formed a Committee to launch a community-driven
project to rejuvenate Rennie Park. They are inviting others to join their committee to
help make improvements in Rennie Park. For more information: Tina Cancilla: 416-760-9575
Cathy Ingham: 416-604-8093 They are planning 3 fundraisers: An Oscar Pool (deadline 5pm

"memory placques". See: http://webhome.idirect.com/~jleeson/rennie_park_Volunteers.htm
