1. HOUSING & HOMELESSNESS - Community Response
public meeting Tuesday, February 27th at 7:30 pm
windermere united church 356 Windermere Ave.
Context and Purpose:
The neighbourhood - particularly Swansea - has become a partner with the City of Toronto
through the City's Let's Build program and with the Fred Victor Centre in the important
effort to alleviate absolute homelessness. The City and Fred Victor Centre plan 42 units
of permanent housing in a building at the corner of Lakeshore and Windermere for single
adults (the Olco station site). There is a widespread perception that the neighbourhood
has not been fully considered a partner in this undertaking - a sense that it has been
"done to" rather than worked with. This widespread perception signals a variety
of vital and important interests at play in the neighbourhood which the Let's Build! Fred
Victor proposal has served as a catalyst to bring to the surface.
The shortage in our neighbourhood of affordable housing is a
long term problem and coupled with rising prices in Swansea and the Bloor West area, will
make it harder and harder for low income neighbours and family members to live in our
community. Do we need to start now to envision a way to introduce and sustain more
affordable housing in the neighbourhood's residential mix?
Date: Shrove Tuesday, February 27th, 7:30 pm in the Parlour,
Windermere United Church.
Shrove Tuesday -- Come to Windermere United Church for a pancake supper that begins
at 5:30 pm -- $5.00/person, then join the meeting!
Proposed Outcome:
a formal partnership among interested groups, organizations, institutions and individuals
to apply for grants from the City-administered federal homelessness initiative and from
the United Church of Canada for a capacity building project focusing on affordable housing
in our neighbourhood. Come with your interest or your group's interest in mind.
plan to attend!

2. STELCO DEVELOPMENT
Over the past few months, REON Development has been taking photographs from residences
& condominiums near the proposed townhouse/condominium development. They have used
computer modelling to display the buildings as they are currently proposed in order to
demonstrate their effect on sightlines and how the "view corridors" will appear.
These will be on display at an Open House on Wed. Feb. 28, between 4-8:00pm at the Swansea
Town Hall.
Also, minutes from the Feb. 7th public meeting are now
available on our website (as are minutes from all community meetings): www.stelco.world19.com

Waste Diversion Task Force - Open House
Thursday Mar. 1, 7-9:00pm
Swansea Town Hall
In the wake of the Adams Mine controversy, Toronto has adopted a goal of diverting 30% of
its waste by 2003, 60% by 2006 and 100% by 2010. The Waste Diversion Task Force 2010 is
composed of all Toronto City Councillors, and is holding a series of Open Houses around
Toronto to get public input to its plan of developing a "made in Toronto"
solution.

Making Every Vote Count: Does Canada Have a Democratic
Deficit?
Wednesday February 28, 2001, 7:30-9:30 pm
at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, 27 Front St. E. (2 blks south of the King Subway
Stn.).
Admission is free.
Do Canadians get what they vote for? Since the birth of
multi-party democracy in Canada, voters have become increasingly frustrated with our
electoral system. Majority governments are routinely elected with less than 50% of the
vote, and smaller parties get squeezed out. Proportional representation, widely used in
Europe, New Zealand and Australia, is often proposed as a solution to voting distortions,
deckling voter turn-out, and exaggerated regional differences. How would 'PR' change the
face of Canadian politics? Is major electoral change realistic? What are the merits of
different voting systems?
