1. WHAT? WORLD19 IS BACK AGAIN... ALREADY?
After
several months of silence, we finally sent out a newsletter a few days ago,
indicating that world19's presence in this newsletter and our website would
become pretty inactive for the foreseeable future.
Here we are just 2
days later with another newsletter. What's going on?
In that last
newsletter, we included an update and comments about Don Jennison, one of
our founding members who passed away last April. Well, it seems, Don will not
let world19 "go gently into that good night". We immediately received a couple
of updates to let us know that Don is still working to do good in the world, so
his friends and partners here cannot disappear so easily.
We learned that
the contributions made in his memory to Morningside-High Park Presbyterian
Church have been funnelled to a fund called "Don's Coffee Pot". Through this,
plans are being made to sell Fair Trade coffee through the church (and use it at
all church functions). Proceeds will be used to build a schoolhouse in Africa in
memory of Don. Although coffee sales haven't begun yet, over $4000 has already
been raised towards the project.
We knew how strong Don's passion and
committment for social and community involvment was when he was here, so we're
not that surprised to see how strong it remains.
We will provide updates as this project develops, and information about how
to buy Don's coffee.
2. BILLY BISHOP SUPPORTS DON'S FUND:
Nov. 5
And following on the above introduction, the following
note comes from Morningside-High Park Church.
This Saturday (Nov. 5).
the church will be presenting an encore presentation of the award-winning
musical, "Billy Bishop Goes to War" about Canada's World War One flying ace
Billy Bishop, whose life on the ground and in the air was so remarkable it
inspired this often funny, often sad theatrical piece, which won a Governor
General's Award for drama. This particular production wowed audiences and sold
out in 2003 so we are looking forward to another great evening.
All revenue generated from this event will support Morningside High
Park Church, Skazmos Theatre Group and Don's Coffee Pot.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for 10-18 and seniors. Available by
calling 416 766-4765.
3. COMMUNITY INPUT SOUGHT REGARDING FUTURE OF HIGH PARK
CONCESSIONS - Nov. 8
The Grenadier Group, which operates the High Park concessions, Grenadier
Café and Sunnyside Pavilion is embarking upon a five year renovation project
with the ultimate goal of revitalizing the park's facilities. To assist in
the process, the Grenadier Group has enlisted the services of the Office for
Urbanism (OFU) - the planning and design firm that was central to the Bloor West
Village visioning exercise, which wrapped up earlier this year.
Public
'open house' meetings are being organized by OFU in an effort to identify
interested stakeholders and gather community input in these early days of the
planning process. The first meeting was held at the Grenadier Café earlier
in October. A second open house is being planned for this
week:

4. CITY OF TORONTO ISSUES
A couple of issues of
relevance to those concerned about how the City of Toronto will continue
emerging from the double albatross of amalgamation and downloading.
The
province remains committed to revising the status of Toronto through the new
"City of Toronto Act", expected to be adopted in the near future. (We have some
information on this from earlier in the year at http://www.toronto.world19.com).
Updates
on the legislation, and an opportunity to comment or ask questions will be
available at the following event:
a) City of Toronto Act Public
Meeting - Nov. 29
Tuesday, November 29, 2005, 7:30 p.m., at Fern Avenue Public School, 128
Fern Avenue, in the General Purpose Room, Roncesvalles-Macdonell Residents'
Association hosts an open meeting with Gerard Kennedy, MPP, and representatives
from the City of Toronto to discuss the new City of Toronto Act. (Following this
meeting a Ward 14 working group will be formed to follow the development of this
important legislation and how it will affect us. If you are interested in taking
part, contact thewestbend@sympatico.ca.)
b)
City Governance Review
The City of Toronto is sponsoring a
review on the structure of city governance that will best meet the demands of a
more independent City. See http://toronto.ca/governingtoronto/index.htm
for opportunities to comment, or to take an online survey.
5.
HUMBER THEATRE SITE
No updates here on the progress of the
development application, just a small comment on the newest major Bloor West
Village property owners, the infamous Wynn Family Holdings.
At a public
meeting in June, the owners' representative made a commitment to clean up the
litter and garbage visible inside the premises. Since the temporary bookseller
tenant vacated or disappeared almost a year ago, no-one seemed to have made the
slightest effort to clean up (or even cover up) a bit of the mess in almost a
year.
We're happy to report that progress has been made on this progress
-- some brown paper has been taped to the windows to try to hide the mess. After
just a few days, however, the obviously cheap tape has been peeling, and we're
getting back to where the mess started.
We look forward to a long-term
relationship with the Wynns as neighbours. No doubt they will bring their
hard-earned reputation to the Village.
Some older info on the proposal, and about the Wynns can be found on our
website.

John Leeson
