1. WORLD19 GARDEN PARTY - June 18
Our annual garden party for our newsletter subscribers will be held Saturday, June 18 this year. We have already arranged for fine weather, and hope lots of you can join us. More details to follow.

2. BLOOR WEST VILLAGE URBAN DESIGN STUDY
The final report of this study (originally referred to as a "Visioning Study") has now been produced. The study was initiated by Councillor Bill Saundercook, and was led by the Toronto firm Office for Urbanism. It involved members of the Bloor West Village BIA, and local residents groups (two members of world19 were part of the Steering Committee).

The purpose was to provide guidelines for future acceptable development along the Bloor corridor in the Village area. While it will have no legal standing, the expectation -- or hope -- is that it will be given significant weight by City Planning staff and the OMB in future development applications -- including the Humber Theatre site.

We hope copies of the study will be made available in local libraries and/or on CD's. In the meantime, we have posted a copy on our website. Be warned however, it's a 9 mb PDF file (requiring the free Adobe Reader software). It can be downloaded from: www.bloor.world19.com/.

(On a closely related note, see the notice below for the Bloor West Village Residents Association meeting focusing on the future of the BWV area).

3. RESIDENT ASSOCIATION MEETINGS
Three upcoming meetings this month. Both BWV area groups are holding meetings on the same night this week:

The Swansea Area Ratepayers' Association (SARA) is having its Annual General Meeting. The guest Speaker is Sarmite Bulte, M.P.

b) Bloor West Village Residents - May 24
Tuesday May 24, 7:00pm
Runnymede United Church
432 Runnymede Rd (2 blocks north of Bloor)

The newly formed Bloor West Village Residents Association invites the public to attend two upcoming town hall meetings:

May 24th at 7 pm at Runnymede United Church on "Shaping our Neighbourhood".
This will be a panel discussion that touches on topics related to building a strong neighbourhood in Bloor West Village. Confirmed panelists include John Bentley Mays, an urban design writer with the Globe and Mail; City Of Toronto Planning Director Gregg Lintern; Kathy Kennedy, Chair of the Bloor West Village Business Improvement Area;and Jennifer Keesmaat, from the Office for Urbanism that developed the Urban Design Study for Bloor West Village (the Visioning Study). Each panelist will give an approximately 15 minute presentation and that will be followed by a Question and Answer session with the audience.

Note also their next meeting in June:
June 20th at 7 pm at Runnymede United Church on "The New Deal for Toronto" with guest speaker Mayor David Miller. The Mayor will speak on the federal and provincial governments' moves on developing a new funding deal for the city. There will also be a Question and Answer session with the audience.

4. SUPPORT FOR MOTHERS:
The following note is from one of our subscribers, Maria Thorburn.

I have been concerned with the 6 week public health programme that is given to new Mums across Toronto. This Spring it was postponed and there is still talk of restructuring (as the euphemism goes) in favour of only economically disadvantaged women. I believe that this is wrong and have written a letter and a petition in support of the programme and I'm hoping that you may be able to help me out by passing it on to your members. I've had some wonderful support so far (St. Jo's breastfeeding Clinic and Metro Mothers Network to name a few) and would like to have as many signatures from across the city as possible in order to ensure that other new mothers are able to benefit from this programme as many of us already have. I would like to have the petition back by Friday May 27th in order to have it mailed by the Monday, if that's possible.

Note: See our main page to find copies of the petition and Maria's letter. If you would like to contact her for information, or to support her campaign, she can be contacted at: Maria Thorburn, phone: 416 767-1944. or email albertins <AT> sympatico.ca (substitute "@" for the <AT>... this is to prevent web harvesters collecting email addresses for spam.)

7. SMART LAND USE PLANNING:
The following note comes to us from a subscriber who is with the Ontario Smart Growth Network.

We are a network of 43 environmental, housing and rate payer groups working to stop sprawl, promote compact development and increase public participation in the planning process. To help achieve this, the OSGN is holding seminars on several planning topics related to smart growth in order to educate and empower our members and the public so that they feel more confident when making deputations, speaking to politicians, etc.

The Ontario Smart Growth Network presents:

"Making Your Dream Community Happen: Understanding and Applying Planning Law to Ensure Smart Land Use Planning in Ontario"

With Theresa McClenaghan, Legal Counsel, Canadian Environmental Law Association

Are you confused and frustrated by the countless legal instruments, processes and institutions that both help and hinder the implementation of smart planning in Ontario? Designed as a primer on planning law, this educational and empowering seminar will help end your confusion by: · clarifying jurisdictional issues, legislation and landowners' rights; · explaining how legislation is created, how it is applied, and how it has supported or delayed smart growth; · presenting current planning and policy issues that are having a bearing on legislation; · providing practical resources and other tools that will help you solve your own smart livable community challenges; · answering your questions at the conclusion of the 1-hour presentation.

Even if you believe that you intimately know the Planning Act, Provincial Policy Statement, Municipal Act, Official Plans and Zoning (to name a few!), you're sure to learn something at this seminar. Please join us!

Theresa McClenaghan has practised public interest environmental law, both in private practice since 1985 and since joining the Canadian Environmental Law Association (www.cela.ca) as counsel in May 1998. Her expertise in environmental law includes land use, environmental health, water law and policy, and constitutional law. Theresa, along with other lawyers at CELA, represented the Concerned Walkerton Citizens in both parts of the Walkerton Inquiry. She was CELA's representative to the province's Source Protection Advisory Committee and currently sits on both the province's Nutrient Management Advisory Committee and Source Protection Implementation Committee.
