1. FRED VICTOR CENTRE: Ready to build or off the
rails?
We received an urgent plea this week by email from one of our subscribers
concerning the long-proposed Fred Victor Centre, to be built at the corner of Lakeshore
& Windermere, as part of the City's "Let's Build" program.
It has been in the works for at least 4 years,
and construction of this much-needed transitional housing facility was expected to finally
start this summer. However, at Councillor Saundercook's request, it has been referred to
Community (and then City) Council for site plan approval. During the 2000 election, Mr.
Saundercook opposed its construction. According to the Fred Victor Centre, he continues to
do so. (An enquiry to his office this week was not responded to).
Concerned residents are urged to phone or write
Councillor Saundercook, the West Toronto Community Council, and/or make a short deputation
to the Tuesday Feb. 17 Coummunity Council meeting. councillor_saundercook@toronto.ca. His
community office phone # is 416-338-5165.
Go to www.world19.com for a great deal more information on
the issue, and details on how to depute.
2. HUMBER THEATRE SITE: A Wynn-family
high rise?
There may be big changes coming to the corner of Jane & Bloor.
We have reported in several newsletters (#129, 130, & 134) about the
fate of the Humber Theatre, and about the property's new owner, the infamous Wynn family
(nominees for the Parkdale Tenants' Association's 2003 "Golden Cockroach
Award"). They have now made an application to amend the Official Plan & Zoning
bylaw to build a 13-story tower on the site.
It would involve ground-floor retail, a 2-story
health club above, and 92 apartment residences on the upper floors. Residential density
will be 5.4, total density 8.0)
Initial discussion will be at the Feb. 17
Community Council. For details on the application, click either of the links below:

Update Note: A world19 subscriber has
informed us that at the February Community Council, the Humber Theatre development item
was deferred to the next Council meeting, April 7.
3. MORE ON PROPERTY RE-ASSESSMENT:
We have updated our web site with all the information sent to us recently
from a neighbourhood correspondent about the problems with the MPAC assessment process,
and information on how (& why) to appeal your assessment. Weve also posted a
range of comments weve received some from other areas in the province, as
well as some analysis of the property tax system sent to us by a subscriber last year. ng
details on how to appeal your assessment.
4. FEDERAL ELECTION NOTES:
On Feb. 12, Peggy Nash won the NDP nomination for Parkdale-High Park.
The Liberals will be holding their nomination Feb. 19. After
much speculation about a nomination battle (including a brief campaign by former Ward 14
Councillor KK, and a lack of support from the Martin camp), it looks like current MP
Sarmite Bulte will in fact be running for re-election this spring. Ms Bulte recently was
elected chair of the Ontario Liberal Caucus.
The Green Party will be holding its nomination in March.
No word yet from the new Conservative Party here in PHP.
5. CITY BUDGET: Have your say on CBC Radio
We received the following note this week
Hi - my name is Jessica Low. I'm a producer with CBC radio's
Metro Morning. We're beginning a new segment on the show to tap in to the city budget
process.
We want you to call us and leave a ONE MINUTE MESSAGE, making
the case for why something YOU care about should get funding from the city.
We want you to be as specific as possible: one community
centre that offers great programmes ... a particular park where you'd like to see the rink
maintained ... your neighbouhood beat cop who you think deserves a salary increase.
Tell us how much more money you need ... and what will happen
if the money isn't spent.
The challenge will be to keep your message short and snappy
... we're going to play as many of these as we can leading up to the city budget. Please
pass this e-mail around to anyone else you know who might be interested ? and call as soon
as you can: the phone number is 416 205 5826.
Look forward to hearing your pitches and pleas
Thanks
Jessica Low
