As mentioned in our last newsletter, there are several items
to pass on, this is part 2 of a "catch-up" newsletter. Stay tuned for a few
other items. And another welcome to another new batch of newsletter subscribers.
In this issue:
1. High Park Citizens' Advisory Committee Open House
2. KK's Future?
3. Ward 13 All-Candidates Meetings
4. Another long-time BWV business leaves
1. HIGH PARK CITIZENS' ADVISORY COMMITTEE OPEN HOUSE - Oct. 22
Their annual open house will be held this Wednesday: from 3pm to 6pm, with a short
presentation and volunteer appreciation at 5pm. All are welcome. To download a map and
directions to the High Park Nature Centre, go to
www.highpark.org and click on Nature Centre and then
directions.
2. KK's FUTURE?
Despite occasional rumours, many people were caught by surprise when long-time Councillor
Chris Korwin-Kuczynski withdrew from the election campaign. Speculation about his next
career have generally focused on foreign postings -- either in Poland or the U.S.
However, we recently heard a new report that carried some
credibiilty -- that Councillor KK has begun campaigning for the federal Liberal nomination
in Parkdale-High Park for the expected spring election. We've heard enough stories
over the past several years that KK had hoped to get the nomination in 1997 when Jesse
Flis retired, however that was the election that the PM, in an effort to increase the
number of women candidates, was able to appoint candidates directly -- thus Parkdale-High
Park inherited an MP from Forest Hill -- to the great consternation (as we've often heard)
of KK.
We will keep ears & eyes open on this...
3. WARD 13 ACM's
Two more upcoming City Council All-Candidate Meetings:
Tue. Oct. 28, 7pm
100 High Park Ave.
Mon. Nov. 3, 6:30pm
3049 Dundas West (Junction Residents' Assoc)
(West Toronto Baptist Church)
4. ANOTHER LONG-TIME BUSINESS LEAVES
Wilkie's Camera Shop, after 37 years on Bloor will be closing in November. Another
independent business where customers could get individual service bows out in favour of
the chain approach.
Interestingly however, a review of BWV businesses from 1979
shows that about 50 businesses (excluding medical & other professional offices, and
financial institutions) are still around 24 years later...
5. NEXT
We still have a few items of interest to pass on in our next newsletter -- including a new
photo section on our website, with photos of our July garden party, the spring dedication
of the Jamie Bell High Park Adventure Playground, election photos, and more...
