1. HIGH PARK ORAL HISTORY
We received this note from Cheryl Hart, the Museum Site Coordinator of Colborne Lodge in High Park:

I am contacting you about a project that Colborne Lodge is involved in with Grade 10 students at Parkdale Collegiate. The students are studying High Park and interviewing people who have spent time in the park. From the information they collect, they will design a travelling exhibit.

We are recruiting people to interview, preferably people whose history with the park extends back a number of years. There may be people in your group who would be interested or would know of people.

The interviews will take place at Parkdale Collegiate during Nov. and Dec.

If you know of anyone, please ask them to contact me at 416-392-6916. Please feel free to contact me if you would like further information of the project.

Thank you Cheryl Hart

2. DEVELOPMENTS
a) Stelco/ REON

(See www.stelco.world19.com for all our info & documentation on this project). Sales have begun for the east site. (The website is www.windermerebythelake.com). Depending on sales progress, construction could start by February or March. However, first the final Site Plan must be submitted to Community Council (tentatively in February). We understand there may be an open community meeting in January on the final plans for the site.

During the construction period, there have been a number of complaints by residents about dust, odours and potential airborne health hazards. REON has provided responses to this in a newsletter that is being distributed in the Swansea area this week (it's also on our website). Toronto Public Health & Ontario Ministry of the Environment have been involved, and have indicated that there should be better procedures in place. REON commissioned a study on the health implications. The study was done by Cantox Environmental Inc (one of REON's principals). The full study, and a letter from REON to the Ministry outlining the issues and how they have dealt with them are all posted on our website. (The conclusion was that there were "no adverse health impacts", and that improved measures have been taken to control dust and odours.

b) Southport Plaza development
Sales have also started for this development -- despite the fact that no City approvals are in place yet. (Teenagers wearing sandwich boards have been strolling Bloor, handing out ads). One residents' group, the Ripley Area Residents' Group is organizing opposition to the development.

They have published a newsletter (available on our website) detailing their reasons for opposition (size, built form, views, green space, traffic, etc.) as well as their concerns about lack of real input into the ongoing committee meetings. They are looking for financial support. See the newsletter for details or phone 416 762-1468.

They have also sent us a photo of a banner opposing the development which was hung recently next to the site (subsequently taken down). Information on all the above (including the photo) is at http://webhome.idirect.com/~jleeson/southport_main.htm

c) The "Meow Towers:?
Now that the Meow club has finally been closed, it's no surprise that a proposal has been made for a condo development on the site (two towers of 18 & 24 storeys). Stay tuned for more info.

3. NEWS FROM RONCESVALLES
Two items from the Roncesvalles-Macdonell Residents' Association:

a) Public meeting Nov 26
Their monthly meeting features Barry Brooks, City of Toronto area planner speaking on planning developments in the area, and Allan Sparrow of Community AIR (Airport Impact Review) on expansion plans for the island airport. Tue. Nov 26, 7:30-9:30pm, Fern Ave. Public School, between Roncesvalles & Sorauren).

b) KK's survey
In Ward14, Councillor Korwin-Kuczynski has distributed another community survey asking for residents' concerns regarding their street or neighbourhood and in Ward 14. The RMA has forwarded this on, along with their suggested responses to Councillor KK. See http://webhome.idrect.com/~jleeson/rma_kk_survey.htm for their note, and a response form.

4. FRONT ST. "EXPRESSWAY"

We've sent a couple of notes in the past about opposition to the proposed Front St. extension ("expressway"). See www.city.world19.com. This week's eye and NOW both carry (differing) articles about this. eye's article ("The futility of fighting Front) cites KK's view that it's a done deal ("both the left and right side of council are behind this".) There's no point in opposing it.

In NOW, Don Wanagas takes a different view. How can the TTC be stretched to the limit, have to raise fares, while we spend "more than $170 million on a glorified on-ramp for the Gardiner Expressway?" The article points out that the latest re-birth of this old plan was tied in to the grandiose Olympics / waterfront revitalization plans that were being unveiled not too long ago. The Gardiner Expressway would be torn down, and the Front St extension was necessary to make up for it. Federal, provincial and city money was available to make it happen. The Olympics died, the Gardiner isn't moving, but Front St. is still moving ahead.

Both Councillors Chow and Miller are quoted in the article against the plan. (Miller suggests if it goes ahead it could be used partly as a transit right-of-way that could connect with the Queensway/Lakeshore streetcar routes, to effectively build a rapid-transit route from downtown to south Etobicoke.

5. ISLAND AIRPORT

Besides the previously mentioned RMA meeting, we have a few other relevant items: - A rally against airport expansion will happen Fri. Nov 22, 4:30-6:30pm at Bathurst & Queen's Quay W. .See www.events.world19.com for details.

The future (or non-future) of the airport will be decided by City Council the week of Nov. 25

For more information see:
