The following motion, moved by Councillor
David Miller, was passed unanimously by Toronto Community Council on Tuesday September 14,
1999, and subsequently by
City Council. As a result, through the Planning & Economic Development departments are
now officially involved in working with members of the community to find a way to address
our concerns.
"WHEREAS world19, a
committee of interested citizens from the Bloor West Village Area, will be tabling a
petition regarding the exodus of small independently owned and operated businesses from
Bloor West Village; and
WHEREAS Urban Planning
and Development Services policy staff are currently preparing a new City Official Plan
Part I; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT this petition be
received by Toronto Communtry Council and forwarded on to Toronto City Council;
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Commissioner of
Urban Planning and Development Services and the Commissioner of Economic Development,
Culture and Tourism be directed to undertake a public consultation process, including a
community meeting to be held in Bloor West Village, to discuss the local concerns and
measures that could possibly help maintain the character of this small business/retail
strip;
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Commissioner of
Urban Planning and Development Services be directed, to review the adequacy of the current
citywide protection policies for small business retail strips, as part of the current
Official Plan Part I update."
