A number of years ago, world19 published extensive
information regarding the flawed CVA (Current Value Assessment) system
which Ontario municipalities base their property taxes on. All the
information which we published was sent to us from two world19 subscribers, David MacAlpine and Bruce Haines.
David has now sent us the following information, regarding
the upcoming deadline to have your property assessment -- which will
determine how your property taxes are calculated for the next four years
-- reconsidered:
FIRST THE BAD NEWS:
March 31, 2009 is the deadline to get your foot in the
door by beginning the appeal process regarding your 2008 Current Value
Assessment (CVA) from the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC).
To do that, you
Even the head of that organization (Carl Isenburg) has
admitted that MPAC makes mistakes, BUT the onus is on you, the taxpayer, to
appeal. If you do not appeal then you will be stuck with MPAC’s
flawed estimate for the next 4 municipal tax years (2009, 2010, 2011 and
2012).
Your individual CVA determines your share of the total
municipal tax bill.
SECOND THE GOOD NEWS:
Two Requests for Reconsideration (RfRs), in draft form,
have been created. [NOTE: These are linked in WORD format]. All you have to do is to put in your name, address and
Roll Number and sign and send the RfR to MPAC.
One RfR is for those who purchased their homes in the time
frame from early 2004 to the present.
The other RfR is for all others.
It is best to send the RfR by registered mail, next best
is by regular mail, but if you are running out of time then use e-mail. In
all cases keep a copy
Our Member of the Provincial Legislature,
Cheri diNovo, is
helping taxpayers as much as she can. Her Community Office is at 3136 Dundas Street West, Phone;
416-763-6530, E-MAIL; dinovo-co@ndp.ca so let her know if you are appealing
and keep her informed regarding MPAC’s response.
Good Luck!
